Buying a Coco de Mer in the Seychelles

The Coco de Mer, the famous nut of the Seychelles with its unmistakable shape, is a highly sought-after souvenir. Since Coco de Mer palms only grow on Praslin and Curieuse and their fruits ripen very slowly, their sale is subject to the strictest nature conservation regulations. If you wish to purchase a Coco de Mer, there are several important points to keep in mind.

Where can you buy a Coco de Mer?

Since the purchase and export of a Coco de Mer is subject to strict laws, it is essential to buy only from officially licensed dealers. Points of sale are located on all three main islands: Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. The main official outlets for the Coco de Mer are the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) and the Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF). Additionally, selected licensed souvenir and tourist shops also carry the nut in their assortment.

For export, Coco de Mer nuts are hollowed out, dried, and provided with an official certificate of authenticity. For export, Coco de Mer nuts are hollowed out, dried, and provided with an official certificate of authenticity.

Types and Prices

Coco de Mer nuts come in various sizes and shapes; weighing usually between 15 to 25 kg, they are considered the largest and heaviest plant seeds in the world. These imposing nuts can reach a diameter of up to 40 to 50 cm and, due to their striking heart-like shape, are a globally unique natural phenomenon.

For sale and export, the nuts are professionally hollowed out and dried to ensure they are durable and fit for transport.

Prices for a specimen range between SCR 3,000 - 6,000, depending on size and quality. Particularly large or four-lobed Coco de Mer nuts can cost up to SCR 10,000. The official export permit and the certificate of authenticity are already included in the price.

Leaving the country with a Coco de Mer

To ensure you bring your precious souvenir home safely and without any issues, please observe the following regulations:

  • Transport in carry-on luggage: Your Coco de Mer must be transported exclusively in your carry-on luggage.
  • Keep documents ready: Always have the official certificate of authenticity (including the hologram sticker) and the proof of purchase within easy reach.
  • Present at security check: Show the nut along with the documents during the security check at the airport. Staff will match the serial number on the nut with your papers.
  • Smooth flight home: Once the inspection is complete, you can start your journey home relaxed and take your unique natural wonder back with you.

Where can you experience the Coco de Mer in nature?

Before buying a Coco de Mer, you should, of course, marvel at it in its natural habitat. At the UNESCO World Heritage Site Vallée de Mai or at Fond Ferdinand on Praslin, you can see the impressive Coco de Mer palms up close. It is fascinating to observe the clear differences between the male flowers and the female nuts directly on the palm tree.
