Drone use in the Seychelles

Anyone visiting the Seychelles quickly understands why many travelers want to experience the islands from the air. From above, the endless beaches, turquoise waters, and lush hills look even more impressive. However, before you take off, it is important to know the local regulations.

Drone Requirements in the Seychelles: Mandatory Registration!

Every drone weighing more than 200 grams must be officially registered. This applies regardless of whether it is a hobby drone or professional equipment.

Registration is straightforward and takes place online. You will need:
  • Passport photo
  • Photo of the drone
  • Serial number of the drone
You can register your drone here: Drone registration at the SCAA

After successful registration, you will receive a confirmation via email from the Safety and Security Regulation Department of the SCAA. You should keep this document handy at all times during your stay, as it serves as proof that your drone is properly registered.

The 4 Most Important Rules for Drone Flights in the Seychelles:

  • Mandatory Registration: Every drone over 200 grams must be registered with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA).
  • Visual Line of Sight: Drones may only be flown within the pilot's line of sight, and night flights are not permitted.
  • Altitude Limit: The maximum flight altitude is 120 meters (400 feet).
  • Distance from People and Buildings: A safe distance from people, buildings, and vehicles must be maintained at all times.

Where Drones are NOT Allowed to Fly:

Even though the Seychelles look breathtaking from the air, there are areas where flying is strictly prohibited to protect nature and privacy:
  • National Parks and Nature Reserves without permission: e.g.: Vallee de Mai (Praslin), Morne Seychellois National Park (Mahé), islands like Cousin, Curieuse, or Aride
  • Near Airports, specifically Mahé Airport and Praslin Airport, as well as near helicopter landing pads
  • Over private property, unless permission from the owner has been granted
  • In many resorts, the use of drones is prohibited to avoid disturbing the peace of other guests
