La Passe – The Center

A lively village full of history

La Passe is the vibrant center of La Digue, one of the smaller yet undoubtedly most charming islands of the Seychelles. The village is located directly at the ferry port on the northwest coast, making it the first place visitors see when arriving from Mahé or Praslin.

The small port of La Passe was already the economic center of the island in the 18th century and remains today the main meeting point for locals and visitors. In the morning, fishing boats unload their catch here, while ferries maintain connections with the neighboring islands throughout the day. Especially in the early evening, when the sun sets over the sea, La Passe shows its full charm.

Life and atmosphere in La Passe

Around the port are small shops, a small vegetable and fish market, and restaurants. Many establishments are family-run and serve freshly caught fish, curries, or tropical fruits! Since La Digue is largely car-free, bicycles are an integral part of the streetscape in La Passe. Numerous rental stations offer bikes (including e-bikes) for exploring the island easily. From here, visitors can quickly reach the famous beaches Anse Source d’Argent and Grand Anse, among the most beautiful in the Seychelles.

Culture and history

La Passe has always been the economic and cultural center of La Digue. The island was colonized in the 18th century by French settlers who cultivated sugarcane. Later, under British rule, La Passe remained a central hub for trade and transport.

Today, charming restaurants, local markets, and everyday island life make La Passe a place where visitors can experience the authentic lifestyle of the Seychellois.
