Mahé, Morne Seychellois
This October, a long-awaited dream finally came true. The Seychelles had been on my bucket list for many years. The reason it took me so long to travel there was that I had always believed it was a destination only for those with plenty of money to spare. I had not really realised that the islands were also accessible to those on an average income. So I started doing some research, and SeyVillas was a great help. The website is informative and easy to navigate, and the photos make you want to fly there immediately.

I can particularly recommend SeyVillas when it comes to car hire. It seems impossible to find a provider that allows you to remove the excess completely. SeyVillas, however, offers an excellent alternative. For an additional fee, you can take out insurance that covers any excess you may have to pay. Even with this added, the total price is still roughly the same as booking elsewhere. The whole process was extremely straightforward, and everything went perfectly. No complications, and a lovely car. It was even an automatic. Another major advantage for many travellers is that communication is available in German. Having someone to speak to in your own language is always reassuring, of course. That is how a holiday should be!

The Seychelles themselves are a beautiful but also adventurous destination when travelling on a budget. If you are exploring independently, you should put aside the idyllic image of luxury that you see in travel brochures. Otherwise, you may end up disappointed. If you really want to get to know the country, I can only recommend mixing with the locals, driving yourself, shopping in the small supermarkets and staying away from the resort beaches. On the other hand, if you want to experience the Seychelles exactly as you have always imagined them, you will need to dig deep and book somewhere close to a dream beach. It all depends on what matters most to you. Alternatively, you could combine the two: travel on a budget first, then finish with a touch of luxury. Whatever you decide, the Seychelles are well worth a visit!

And here are a few more tips:
Both planes and ferries operate between the neighbouring islands of Mahé and Praslin. The ferry takes around an hour and costs an average of €50 each way. For only a few euros more, you can fly instead. Not only does this help protect marine life, but it also gives you the added pleasure of admiring the full splendour and colours of these paradise islands from above. On Praslin, hiring a car is recommended because the roads are very hilly. Cycling is only suitable for the extremely fit. Buses are a very inexpensive alternative. A single journey costs around 7 Seychellois rupees (approximately €0.45), and you can remain on board for as long as you like. However, the drivers will not take passengers carrying luggage. The journeys are adventurous, and you should allow for long waiting times. Although the bus network is good, it does not reach everywhere. So, if your budget allows, hiring a car is the best option. On La Digue, by contrast, a bicycle is the usual way to get around.
Once again, many thanks to SeyVillas!
