A Break from Everyday Life in the Seychelles

My brother and I decided to travel together at the end of 2016. As we could only find just over 2 weeks when we were both free, we spontaneously decided to book a trip to the Seychelles without doing much research into the country or its people. Many of our friends made fun of us, as the Seychelles are considered a destination for weddings and honeymoons. This left us feeling a little concerned – but there was absolutely no need. The Seychelles boast incredible beaches, consistently lovely weather, fantastic food and extraordinary flora and fauna! Of course, you do see couples, but there are also many families and often groups of female friends or solo travellers who simply want to relax completely.

The direct flight from Germany – Frankfurt in our case – takes 10 hours, which is very manageable, and all our transfers went smoothly and were perfectly punctual. That is not necessarily something you would usually expect in countries outside Europe, so we were pleasantly surprised! The people are very friendly, and not once did we encounter the supposedly ‘arrogant’ attitude of the Seychellois that we had so often read about. It is, of course, wonderful that you can communicate perfectly well in English and French. Local people often approached us in a friendly, unobtrusive way, and we spontaneously enjoyed some wonderful moments and excursions with them.

Praslin

After arriving on Mahé, we continued directly to Praslin by ferry. Unfortunately, we had to wait for several hours, which was rather tiring after the 10-hour flight, but the crossing was quick and trouble-free, and it was not long before we reached our lovely accommodation, Le Tropique. We received a warm welcome and had some wonderful days there. Restaurants and takeaways are a little further away, but the food was always delicious. The beach at our accommodation was lovely, very private and clean. The seaweed in the water did not bother us – that is simply part of nature.

La Digue

After 6 nights, we continued to La Digue – enchanting!!! We would happily have spent a few more days there. The island is peaceful and relaxed, and by bicycle you can reach wonderful places where, if you wish, you can be completely alone. We have never seen more beautiful beaches. Highly recommended!!! The Patatran has a wonderful hotel beach and a lovely pool. The rooms were fine for the price, and the staff were genuinely friendly and eager to help.

Our greatest highlight, however, was the evening at the Sunset Café up on the mountain. We were collected in a small truck, enjoyed an incredible meal and watched the flying foxes and the sunset over cocktails. The journey back in complete darkness was breathtaking and unforgettable!

Mahé

To finish, we wanted to relax somewhere a little more luxurious – and the AVANI Seychelles Barbarons Resort & Spa was ideal for this. It is far from any large towns and is a true haven of tranquillity. The breakfast and evening buffets were fresh and delicious every day. The only drawback was that the rooms were slightly worn for this price category – though they were furnished to a very high standard. There were plenty of available sun loungers and a lovely beach. Although it was tidal, there was always a spot where we could paddle or swim.
