Paradise on Earth

La Digue

We spent some wonderful days over Christmas and New Year in the Seychelles with our children. It was simply marvellous.
We first enjoyed 3 days on the island of La Digue. We stayed at the Patatran, which is around a 10-minute cycle ride from La Digue harbour. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The resort has a magnificent private beach.

La DigueLa Digue We decided to take a PADI diving course at the PADI Dive Centre on La Digue and were amazed by the diversity of the underwater world. We saw all sorts of colourful fish, as well as sea turtles. On one occasion, the waves were quite high out at sea, and I did feel a little uneasy when we surfaced, but we had tremendous fun and it was definitely worthwhile.

Anse Source d’Argent on La DigueAnse Source d’Argent on La Digue We explored the island by bicycle. It was great fun, even for our teenage children, who prefer riding motorbikes at home, and we also encountered giant tortoises on land.

A tortoise outdoors on La DigueA tortoise outdoors on La Digue Cycling around La Digue is very safe, as there are no cars on the island apart from a few taxis. This is the place to unwind, slow down and enjoy the tranquillity. Anse Source d’Argent is the island’s most famous beach, with its impressive rock formations. It is the perfect beach for photographs – just like something from a picture book... Unfortunately, the weather was not at its best that day, but we still managed to take a few great pictures. We would happily have stayed longer, but the next wonderful island was already waiting for us – Cerf Island...

Cerf Island

When we arrived at the gorgeous Cerf Island Resort, we were amazed by the island’s beautiful plant life: coconut palms, tea bushes, mango, avocado and banana trees, and much more.

Cerf IslandCerf Island As our hotel was situated in a nature reserve and surrounded by a reef, we swapped our diving equipment for snorkels and saw the most colourful fish right on our doorstep. Simply wonderful. The food on Cerf Island was a real delight. There was always freshly caught fish, as well as Creole and international dishes.

Cerf IslandCerf Island We explored the neighbouring islands by canoe and pedalo. A trip to Moyenne Island is highly recommended. I had never been to such a wonderful place before. There is a path around the island, rather like a jungle trek. Numerous giant tortoises live on the island, and at night you can also spot bats. My favourite place was the beautiful white sandbank. At high tide, it almost disappeared completely before re-emerging at low tide. This place is simply magical!

Moyenne Island (easy to reach by canoe from Cerf)Moyenne Island (easy to reach by canoe from Cerf) There is also a small restaurant on Moyenne Island. Our tip: enjoy a delicious barbecue on the beach with freshly caught fish. It is important to take cash with you, as credit cards are not accepted!

Moyenne IslandMoyenne Island During our holiday, we also took a trip to the main island of Mahé. We explored the island using public transport, namely the buses. They are around 10 times cheaper than taxis. We really liked Beau Vallon beach and also went on two dives from there. Once again, we saw sea turtles and even baby sharks.

One thing is certain – this will not be our last visit to the Seychelles – it was sooooo beautiful!
