A Dream Three-Week Seychelles Holiday with Our Baby

Our long-awaited trip to the Seychelles began on 13 September 2019, when we flew directly from Frankfurt to Mahé with Condor. A 10-hour flight with an 11-month-old baby is certainly no easy feat, even though our little one slept for almost the entire flight. Nevertheless, we were delighted when we finally landed on Mahé and felt the warm air greet us as we stepped off the plane.

We decided to fly from Mahé to Praslin, as the ferry crossing is apparently often very rough and not suitable for those with sensitive stomachs. The flight from Mahé to Praslin takes only 15 minutes and is a real adventure in the small propeller plane. It is very cramped and, if you fly during the day, also very warm. On the plus side, you can look directly over the pilot’s shoulder during the flight.

We spent a total of 7 days on Praslin. Anse Volbert (Cote d'Or) is a very small place, but it has 3 mini-markets where you can find everything you need for a self-catering stay. At the small market square, you can also buy fresh fruit and freshly caught fish every day (fresh fish, such as 2 jobfish or a large tuna, costs around €10).

Anse Lazio is very beautiful, and there are some good takeaways in Baie Ste Anne where you can enjoy tasty food at affordable prices, such as Coco Rouge. Of all the beaches, however, Anse Volbert (Cote d'Or) is the most beautiful, even though we had quite a problem with sandflies.

There are only a few cars on La Digue, and everyone explores the island by bicycle. Our accommodation here was Fleur de Lys, once again on a self-catering basis. It is a lovely property on a small side street.

The facilities at Fleur de Lys were somewhat simpler than at our previous accommodation, and as it was surrounded by lush vegetation, you should not be afraid of insects.

There were a great many ants and lizards in the apartment itself, and unfortunately we could not sit on the terrace in the evening, as we would otherwise have been bitten all over by mosquitoes. The highlight of La Digue is definitely the tortoises, which lie by the roadside and can simply be stroked.

Overall, we found that 7 days on La Digue was quite a long time and that you could explore the island in 3–4 days. Fresh fish is only rarely available to buy here, but there are far more takeaways than on Praslin. For travellers with a baby, I would definitely recommend accommodation with a pool, as the currents at almost all the beaches are very strong and therefore not particularly suitable for babies. Our final stop was Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare on Mahé.

Kempinski on MahéKempinski on Mahé It is a wonderful resort, and the service is simply exceptional. The staff are very attentive and extremely child-friendly. This hotel is highly recommended for families. We did not go on any excursions on Mahé, as after 2 weeks of self-catering and exploring the islands, we simply wanted to relax for another week.

Overall, we found the Seychelles to be a very suitable destination for travelling with a baby. Unfortunately, it rained relatively frequently during the 3 weeks we were there, which the locals told us was rather unusual for that time of year.

The roads/paths in the Seychelles are very suitable for pushchairs, and we would recommend bringing one with you. To sum up, all I can say is that it was a wonderful holiday, and we would travel to the Seychelles with a baby again at any time.
